ASK BIG Meeting

Public Meeting regarding the planned Expressway

The meeting will be held at El Rancho, 24 Kauri Road, Waikanae, on Thursday 19th August at 7.30 pm.

A public meeting will be held on the 19th August to enable the community to hear objective and expert information on the proposed Kapiti expressway. This is the anniversary of the Government’s announcement that it would overturn the agreed plans for the Western Link Road.

As the local Council elections approach, ASK (Alliance for a Sustainable Kapiti) is convening a meeting where:

  • Experts will deliver objective technical information
  • Politicians can present their views.
  • The community can refine their opinions to be expressed through the election.

Confirmed experts are James Lunday, an urban planner from Common Ground Ltd, reviewing the current conceptual design from a sustainable development perspective and Ben Ngaia  Chairperson of Takamore Trust, reviewing the current conceptual design from a tangata whenua perspective.

NZTA has declined to attend.

Politicians who have confirmed include Mayor Jenny Rowan, members of the Greater Wellington Regional Council Transport Committee, Nigel Wilson, Paul Bruce and Judith Aitken, along with transport portfolio holders Darren Hughes (Labour), Gareth Hughes (Green) and Mana MP Winnie Laban.

Nathan Guy has sent his apologies and Steven Joyce is unavailable but has agreed to send a letter to be read to the meeting.

ASK spokesman Nick Fisher said, “It is unfortunate that those in power who are forcing this motorway on us will not be available to attend. The little stall in Coastlands rather proves how inadequate is the information available.

We hope that this meeting will go some way to informing the community what awaits them if this project were allowed to proceed, as well as informing them of the alternatives.”
