Elections 2010
On the 9th October 2010, the people of Kapiti will have the opportunity to voice their concerns about the proposed motorway in the best way to make a difference.
There are several dates of significance in the build up to that actual election. Some of these are shown below.
| 23 July 2010 | Nominations Open |
| 20 August 2010 | Nominations Close |
| 25 August 2010 | Public notice of candidates’ names |
| 22 September 2010 | Delivery of voting documents |
| 9 October 2010 | Election day and Preliminary Results Announced |
In all we will get 5 votes each. There are candidates standing for the various Community boards (1), as Ward councillors (2), as district wide Councillors (3) and as Mayor (4). Oh an of course there will be various candidates standing for the regional councillor to GWRC (5).
Some of these candidates want to ignore the 10 years of consultation and ditch the local Western Link Road (WLR) for a four to six lane motorway. What we at SaveKapiti call a road through Kapiti not a road for Kapiti.
Some will call it an Expressway instead of the motorway it would really be. This use of a softer term is a deception and you have to be aware that they are trying fool you. If they try to deceive you on this, what else will they try to deceive you on? Some have in the past even called it the Western Link Road Expressway or the Sandhills Expressway. Both terms to disguise what this road will really mean.
Some ask you to use “common sense” and vote for OneKapiti. But how can it be “one” if we allow a motorway to divide the beach from the town ? How can it be sensible to stop the WLR which would be usable in 2012 and support a motorway which will not be ready until 2019 ?
We at SaveKapiti have contacted every sitting councillor and below are their responses, either in favour of the local WLR or in favour of the more expensive RoNS (Ruin of Natures Sandhills).
When the nominations close we will contact every candidate and ask them one simple question, “Are you in favour of the two lane local Western Link Road or the four to six lane motorway ?”
