Safety of SH-1 in Kapiti

Road safety Figures for SH1 through Kapiti

Nathan Guy and Stephen Joyce (and NOT NZTA) has gone public telling us, SH-1 through Kapiti is a dangerous road.
This is not the truth, it is misinformation deliberately perpetrated to make us think that SH-1 can not continue as the primary route through Kapiti.
The truth is that this stretch of road is not even in the top twenty most dangerous roads in NZ.
NZTA themselves measure, Personal Risk which is a measure of the danger to each individual using the state highway being assessed.

Personal Risk = (Fatal crashes + serious injury crashes)/Distance Travelled

Personal Risk takes into account the traffic volumes on each section of state highway.
Note that SH-1 between MacKays and Levin does not feature in the top 26.

GWRC Quote “Risk cannot be eliminated through infrastructure improvements alone.”
